I always find it helps me to visualize a person from their blog/sites when they post a picture of themselves or write an interview on themselves for their readers. Here are somethings about me :: Blushing Pearl, in a nutshell. If you have any inquiries about my work, the process, influences, tricks-of-the-trade, leave a comment. I will try my best to pass on my little knowledge of this art world.
When did you decide to delve into the design world?
I have always been interested in art. It could be that my parents always enrolled me in classes such as pottery, printmaking, painting, etc. at the Barnsdall Art Park every summer. Teachers saw I had some talent, but I never considered being an artist for a living. I had accounting on my mind. It was not until my senior year in high school (where I needed to fulfill my credits for art) where I was introduced to an area in art that can possibly make some money- Graphic Design. I am more of a fine art person and have fought with the strict grid of the design world but I believe I have found my creative haven in fashion and letterpress.
What was your first design job?
After college, I was able to get a job as an intern (unpaid) for Giant Merchandising, which later turned into a full time job. This was one of the top companies in fashion to work for at the time. Owned by Time Warner, we had tons of band merchandise, movie posters, etc. I barely new the programs fresh out of school, but I was lucky my boss had tons of patience!
What inspires your work?
Nothing in particular inspires me. I have come to realize my upbringing and activities have greatly influenced my work. My parents took me and my 3 sisters on many road trips. I was always busy and was never allowed to watch too much television. I used to take Kumon, which was a Japanese math tutoring class that was about 2-3 grades above American math. I took piano lessons for 13 years through the Suzuki Method, which utilizes your ear versus your eyes when playing an instrument. I used to dance your basic tap and jazz. In college I picked up Polynesian dancing with Kei Alaha. With the Kei Alaha family, we traveled to places like Panama and New Zealand exposing the Polynesian culture. Competitions were brutal! Now that I'm older (and getting creakier) I've eased up on the activities. My main activity now is Capoeira with CBLA ...and letterpress printing, of course!
What would you say your art style is like?
I would have to say I have an organic art style. Though it's always changing, this style seems to always be consistent. I have a tendency to embellish, but can simplify if needed.
I wish I can illustrate beyond doodling and sketches. Illustration seems to be the requirement for graphic artists these days.
How did you get into letterpress printing?
I had taken various fiber art courses in college. One was the art of bookbinding. My instructor, Denise Figueredo, introduced me to one of her classes at the Pasadena Armory for the Arts- letterpress printing. I took one semester of letterpress and loved it! I never considered owning my own press until last year, when I was laid off (twice) and took the opportunity to refine my skills in printing. I enrolled in Denise's class 2 more times and carefully took notes. She is VERY knowledgeable and precise in her technique. I also love to be hands on with my art. Being on the computer all day can be tiring. Doing things by hand is very rewarding!
What is your astrological sign?
Taurus, of course!
What is the number one question people seem to ask you when they meet you?
"What is your nationality?"
