A Birthday Gift To Remember

Fresh Pressed :: Custom Icon Notes for my old roommate Kaci! (she is also ROBsessed with Rob Pattinson, Edward from Twilight) In the shop, these personalized notes come with the option to "pick your own" icon or dingbat. In case you missed the post, it's here. Kaci doesn't know I made them for her. It's her "big" birthday day this year. It's nice to be getting something in the mail that isn't a bill! Happy Birthday, Kdawg!

Measuring Up

I came across a blog article written by Rob Bowen of My Ink Blog entitled "Measuring Up: Are You a Good Designer or A Great One?" This was somewhat of a wake up call to me as a designer. When I used to work for a big company, there was either little or no room to explore and be creative. There were always rules and standards each client had in regards to their artwork. For those who don't know, I started my design career working in the fashion industry. Fashion can be outrageously creative, but one has to also follow the trend. After weeks of designing in a certain style, under the crunch of deadlines, the "trend" becomes SO last season fairly quick! One good thing about repeating a design trend is that your skills in technique grow. For example, remember that Ed Hardy, tattoo looking art style?  For a time, that became the trend. Clients wanted "Ed Hardy-esque" artwork. As a result, my skills in recreating a tattooed ink design became pretty sharp. After a while, I found myself designing in ways that did not stimulate my creative drive. This article made me realize that in order to be a great designer, you have to work at it, internally. Push yourself to become better and to not be stuck in the cookie cutter design world.

A few key points of this article really hit home:

Keep Moving Forward

Never be satisfied with where you are at in design. It is always changing and you should be growing along with it. You should effectively never stop learning. Keep challenging yourself to learn and do more, never let your skills and talent stagnate.

Be A Leader, Not A Follower

Guide your clients to the right design choices do not let them lead you to a subpar, phoned-in performance. Yes, listen to their suggestions and know what they want, but find the best way to give it to them without compromising your talent or reputation.

Try To Set Trends, Not Be A Slave To Them

Design trends come and go almost with the seasons, and there is no shame in designing in that theme, especially if you never have before, but do not let these whims become your only bearing for what to do. Think outside the proverbial box, and find new directions to veer off in.

Critical Thinking Accepted

The design community is available to garner valuable feedback and insight regarding your work, but you have to know how to take and use constructive criticism and not let it bother or deter you. Learn to identify true criticism from callous comments intended merely to upset you, and this will be easier to do.

Collaborate, A Great Way To Reset The bar

Working with others in the community is another invaluable tool you have at your design disposal for sure. This always challenges you to step it up a notch and push yourself more so than working with a client on a project can. This can also be a fun way to learn new things from other designers, good or great.

Stay Inspired

One thing that separates the goods from the greats is passion. Our passion keeps us inspired as long as we keep it fed and the flame fanned so it does not burn out. Always turn to new avenues to find inspiration so that your creative mind stays revitalized, and your perspective fresh.

Since I have started Blushing Pearl, I found that I am really pushing the envelope. Stationery design is a different area of design that I need to adjust to. Letterpress printing is something entirely challenging and disciplinary. I have only been printing for about 6 months. I set my standards pretty high because of what I have been doing design-wise for the past 7 years. I have to understand that this is a new endeavor and discouraging emotions, troubleshooting headaches, difficult client interactions, are all a part of the growing process. In effect, this challenge is pushing me extra hard and is helping me grow as a designer. In fact, I am even creating my own website... from scratch! Something I probably would never have done if it not for the much needed update of my business.

Barbary Coast Brew Tags

David, a friend of mine from Capoeira, approached me with this fun project. He is brewing his own moonshine called "Barbary Coast". For those that do not know, "the Barbary coast was the section of coast line along the north east of Africa that was rife with pirates during the 1600/1700's. It is also what San Francisco was called back during the gold rush because there was so much crime". (David is from SF and is into the city's historical background.) I'm hoping he will send along a sample bottle of this brew!
Added, is a generic "Home Brew" tag for those who would like to use these tags for their own brew.

Valentine's Day :: Love it or Hate it

Happy Valentine's Day! A day to celebrate the universal language of "love"...Many of my single friends dread this day and regard it as awkward, submitting to wallowing in self pity. I used to hate Valentine's day. I felt it overrated, with all the fatty chocolates, candies with corny phrases on it, red roses, etc. It probably still is, but "love" needs to be appreciated, couple or not. All you "singles", have a night out, give each other gifts of love that can be defined through the friendship you have. There are some people out there, who do not even have the luxury of a true, honest, friendship.

Enough jibber-jabber! Forget the chocolates and over-sized cards..Studio Choo makes Valentine's day quite tasteful and needless to say, refreshing!

Sweet Anonymity Design :: Business Card Proof

I officially met Andreanna of Sweet Anonymity Designs at one of our fellow Capoeirista's bon voyage gatherings. Andreanna (who's Capoeira nickname is "Grega") and I have probably played against each other in a Roda, being in the same Capoeira group, but never had a chance to talk. Sitting in the outside patio at a local bar in Eagle Rock called "The Verdugo Bar", we both started talking about what we do outside of Capoeira. Turns out, she is an artist and paints tile and found objects with very intricate and detailed line work. I suggested she open up her shop on Etsy-which are in her plans, but wanted to know more about how it works, etc. She is in the process of branding her artwork through website and business cards... which she asked me to do! Here are the proofs. The business cards incorporate her "bird" logo. Being an artist herself, Andreanna suggested a blind print (a colorless impression), which I am pretty excited to see printed.

Update: Option C was chosen!

Fresh Pressed :: Pick your own business card

Fresh Pressed :: Chosen from "Pick your own business card" listing at the shop, option 2! Here was the proof approved by the client. Interested in the other 3 options? Check them out in this posting. Different design styles for different tastes!

I've been thinking lately about redesigning an entirely NEW look for Blushing Pearl to go along with the new move. I'll be sticking to a color palette of "blush" -mauve pink, fog gray, retro peach, black, and gold...Still have not decided on what program I will submit myself to for designing the updated website (torture!), but this new look is ready to be launched! Before the makeover however, I decided to print some of these beauties for myself :)

Bridal Cake Suite

A bride on etsy contacted me about bridal shower invitations. I only had one design available, but she loved it! I custom-tailored the design with the bride's info and offered matching Thank You cards. I was able to create a "suite" that was 100% custom. Here are the proofs:

Getting Personal

Today is the first day of printing my final custom orders from Etsy ("final" meaning before I have to pack up my press for a big move). Vintage Gothic and Whispy Notes are all the rage this year! One client added her address to her envelopes. Both are packaged in a nice gift box and can be found at the shop.

On a side note, I did major damage today. To keep the momentum flowing, I continued printing, knowing I was tired and maybe should have waited until tomorrow. I printed and ended up tossing the project. It was a disaster and complete waste of time! I am re-printing tomorrow with more focus and attention... hopefully!

Still getting the hang of photographing my final prints. I bought one of those "soft boxes" on ebay. The cool thing is, it's a collapsible setup, therefore taking less room in my already small studio. I still end up adjusting the images in Photoshop, as lighting seems to be ok on the camera screen... but when uploaded to my iMac, looks darker. :( Maybe it's time to invest in a camera that's not just for "point n shoot" only?
